A few hundred years ago and still today on the air ways, false messengers (faith only movement) deceived many with the verse Revelation 3:14-20 combined with the thief on the cross, keeping it not known the important factor about the thief on the cross, he was already in a covenant with God, where if he sinned, he only needed to repent, confess the sin and having a sacrifice would be forgiven, he had all four requirements.
Revelation 3:14-20 is written to the back slidden in the "church", people already in a covenant, ready to be spurred out of God's mouth, the angel was calling them to repentance, which the church has the spiritual privilege, being in covenant, God will forgive them upon true repentance and accept them, these are not non-christians , but already christians, in covenant, in the spiritual kingdom of God, the church. These verses are meant for the church, the back slidden of the church calling them to repentance, not for non-christians.

14 To the angel of the church in Laodicea write: These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God's creation.
15 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.
16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.
17 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:
18 I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.
19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.
20 Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest, and repent. Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me."

The faith only movement used this verse to say to non-christians, Christ is knocking, if you just ask him, like the thief on the cross, go to him in prayer and welcome him in your heart (which by itself is fine), but they go further and say he will come in and forgive you of your sins at the very moment you pray with them, and make you a member of the church at the very moment you pray with them.
The unlearned in scripture, failing to perceived and see who the angel is speaking too? The answer clearly written the church, who are the church? All them who are in covenant, have already entered into covenant with God through belief, repented, confessed, immersed (water) in Christ, been born again, had entered into covenant, been forgiven of sins, added to the church by God. One particular spiritual blessing, privilege of being in the new covenant is, if one sins, he can confess the sin to Christ, combined with true repentance and be forgiven. But you must first be in covenant to have this spiritual blessing.
Many people are introduce to a
church one time or another that teaches the "sinners prayer", or been
raised since
a child into one. It may be
their only face to face
experience with anyone claiming to be Christian, and they liken to have
an experience of being inlove, becoming very, very attach, feeling,
thinking they found Christ in their
mist.
The church is referred to as the bride, and Christ Jesus as the husband of the bride (church) in the bible. It may be very disheartening, when after many years, the realization one has been in a relationship with an impostor, pretending to be Christ Jesus, this impostor teaching most of the things of Jesus Christ, as an angel of light, but has included the hoodwink " sinner's prayer" to seduce, divert people into not following after the true husband, Christ Jesus. The true husbandry Christ Jesus teaches believer's baptism (water ) in Christ for the forgiveness of sins. They who really want to be married, to the true husband, Christ Jesus, will separate themselves from them who teach the hoodwink "sinner's prayer", and join them that are the true bride who has been baptized (water) in Christ to wash away their sins, forgiveness.
There are Catholics, Jewish,
and Protestants all looking to the written word and trying to emulate
Christ life or Abraham's life. Some living very decent lives I may say,
but living a decent life, will never be declared, counted justified in
God's sight, their still a sinner, because they haven't humbly
submitting to the burial with him in believer's baptism (water)
through
the faith of the working of God, for forgiveness of sins, to enter into
